Michael Jackson was a virtuoso composer. He built songs even though he could not read music or play instruments well. Instead, he worked out parts by singing and beatboxing them into a tape recorder. One collaborator said Jackson could sing an entire string arrangement, including every part, harmony, and detail, because he already had it all in his head.
