In 1962, NASA used electronic computers to calculate the orbit of American astronaut John Glenn around Earth for the first time. Before the flight, Glenn specifically asked American mathematician Katherine Johnson to verify the machine’s numbers by hand. He refused to fly unless Johnson confirmed the calculations, and her work helped clear the way for his historic mission.
