In 1922, Canadian physician Frederick Banting, medical student Charles Best, and biochemist James Collip helped turn insulin into a treatment for children dying from diabetes. A famous retelling describes how they went from bed to bed in a Toronto hospital ward, injecting comatose children with the new extract, and the first child began to wake as they reached the last one.
