American physicist Robert Millikan disliked Albert Einstein’s idea that light could behave like particles, so he subjected Einstein’s photoelectric equation to careful experimental tests. In 1916, Millikan used high-vacuum experiments, optical filters, and multiple metals to remove earlier sources of error. Instead of disproving Einstein, he confirmed the particle nature of light, and the work helped earn Millikan the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physics.
