Rivercane Once Covered American South

North America once had native bamboo forests that stretched from New York down to Florida and west from Ohio across to Texas. This bamboo, known as rivercane, grew in dense stands called canebrakes. Those forests became far smaller over time as land clearing, farming, and development destroyed much of their habitat.
