In 1812, Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered the lost city of Petra while traveling through the region in disguise as a Muslim trader. He had learned Arabic, studied local customs, and used the name Sheikh Ibrahim Ibn Abdallah to move more safely through Ottoman-controlled lands. After hearing rumors of ancient ruins hidden beyond a narrow gorge, he persuaded local guides to take him there by claiming he wanted to sacrifice a goat near the tomb of Aaron. His journey brought Petra back to wider Western attention after centuries of obscurity.
