In 2015, researchers discovered that giraffes were not nearly as silent as many people thought. Because giraffes have long necks, scientists had suspected that vocal vibration might be difficult, so the team recorded almost 1,000 hours of audio across three zoos. After 8 years of recordings, they discovered that giraffes produced a low humming sound mostly at night.
