Bamiyan Caves Emerged After Destruction

After the Taliban destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan in 2001, excavators found that the damage had exposed about 50 previously hidden caves. Researchers discovered wall paintings inside 12 of them and later dated some of the artwork to between the 5th and 9th centuries. In 2008, archaeologist Zemaryalai Tarzi also found the remains of a previously unknown 19-meter reclining Buddha near the site.
