In 2015, scientists on a National Geographic expedition found sharks living inside Kavachi, an active underwater volcano near the Solomon Islands. The team dropped camera equipment into the crater and filmed hammerhead and silky sharks moving through hot, acidic water. Divers could not safely investigate the crater because the heat and acidity could burn their skin.
