Around 850 CE, Chinese alchemists accidentally discovered gunpowder while trying to create a "fountain of youth" potion. They mixed charcoal, saltpeter, and sulfur, producing a black powder called huo yao. The discovery later moved from alchemy into warfare, and the Song Dynasty used gunpowder weapons against Mongol invasions. Over time, the same accidental discovery led to fire lances, cannons, grenades, and early guns.
