Cimabue Painting Saved From Trash

In June 2019, auctioneer Philomene Wolf inspected the home of a woman in her 90s in Compiegne, France, and spotted a small painting that had hung in the woman’s kitchen for years. The family had nearly thrown it away, but expert Eric Turquin later authenticated it as "Christ Mocked," a 13th-century work by Italian painter Cimabue, also known as Cenni di Pepo. Cimabue had only a small number of known works, which made the discovery extraordinary. In October 2019, the painting sold at auction for about $26.8 million.
