Thomas Taylor’s Random Cover Wizard

Thomas Taylor’s Random Cover Wizard

On the first edition back cover of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone," the illustrated wizard was not a character from the book at all. British illustrator Thomas Taylor later explained that he based the figure on his own father because he did not know the book would become a phenomenon. He simply needed a wizard image for the cover, and that random choice became part of one of the most collectible Harry Potter editions.
