In 2008, J.K. Rowling wrote an 800-word Harry Potter prequel on both sides of an A5 postcard for a charity auction. The handwritten story featured James Potter and Sirius Black before the events of the main series, and it sold for £25,000 to support English PEN. In 2017, the postcard was stolen during a burglary in Birmingham, England, and police asked fans to report it if anyone tried to sell it. As of 2025, the original handwritten manuscript had still not been located.
