After nine seasons of "Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood" from 1968 to 1976, Fred Rogers paused the show and created an adult PBS series called "Old Friends ... New Friends." The documentary-style program featured Rogers interviewing people about relationships and meaning in life, but critics largely reacted negatively, and the show lasted only 20 episodes. Rogers returned to "Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood" in 1979 and continued making the original children’s show until 2001.
