American actress Katharine Hepburn went to the Oscars only once, even though she won 4 Academy Awards, more than any other performer. In 1974, she came straight from her garden to present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, still wearing a loose black gardening outfit. Backstage, workers reportedly had to spray-paint the outfit black to hide the mud stains before she walked onstage.
