During the Mariner 4 mission launched in 1964, JPL engineers were so eager to see the first close-up Mars image that they did not wait for the official processed version. A machine printed the raw image data as rows of numbers on paper strips, and the team taped the strips together and hand-colored the numbers like paint-by-numbers to reveal the picture immediately.
