American actress Sarah Culberson was born in 1976 in West Virginia and was put up for adoption as an infant. As an adult, she hired a private investigator to find her birth parents and learned that her biological father was from a ruling family in Sierra Leone. That discovery made her a princess of the Mende people. Culberson later used the connection to support education and rebuilding work in Sierra Leone through the Kposowa Foundation.
