In 2000, American heavy metal band Metallica hired a consulting firm to monitor Napster for people illegally sharing their music. The firm generated a 60,000-page list that identified 335,435 users, which Metallica then delivered to Napster's office with a demand for their ban. The move came during "Metallica v. Napster, Inc.," one of the biggest early fights over online music piracy. Napster later blocked hundreds of thousands of users.
