If your ancestors survived major epidemics in Europe, they may also have passed down a mutation called CCR5-Ξ32 that helps block HIV from entering white blood cells. About 10 percent of Europeans carry the mutation, and repeated plague outbreaks from the Black Death onward helped drive it to higher levels over time.
