Researchers have found that every blue-eyed person alive today shares a single common ancestor who lived roughly 6,000 to 10,000 years ago. Before that mutation appeared, humans had only brown eyes. Scientists linked blue eyes to a genetic change that reduced brown pigment production without completely shutting it off.
