After NASA astronaut Gus Grissom barely survived the splashdown of Liberty Bell 7 in 1961, he decided his next capsule needed a joke. For his Gemini mission, he named the spacecraft “Molly Brown,” a nod to the Broadway show "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." NASA hated the name and asked him to pick something else, and Grissom offered “Titanic.”
