Eric Carle Got Drafted Twice

American children’s author Eric Carle was born in New York City, but his family moved back to Germany before World War II. During the war, the German army drafted his father, and Carle, still a teenager, was conscripted to dig trenches. After the war he returned to the United States, only to face another draft, this time into the U.S. Army. The military then stationed him in Germany, sending him back to the same country he had just escaped.
