Kathy Kane Batwoman "Straightened" Batman

Kathy Kane Batwoman

In 1956, DC introduced Kathy Kane as Batwoman in Detective Comics #233 after psychiatrist Fredric Wertham’s 1954 book "Seduction of the Innocent" fueled public accusations that Batman and Robin read as homosexual. DC positioned her as a built-in love interest for Batman to blunt that criticism, basically using romance as damage control. The irony is that DC later rebuilt Batwoman as Kate Kane in 2006, and this modern Batwoman is explicitly portrayed as lesbian.
