In 1963, a 13-year-old boy named Jim Shooter wrote comics at home and mailed his scripts to DC Comics, hoping someone would take him seriously. DC’s editor Mort Weisinger liked what he saw and quickly commissioned Shooter to write Superman stories. By 14, Shooter held a regular writing spot at DC, and he used the paycheck to help support his struggling parents.
