When DC started mapping out the landmark "Crisis on Infinite Earths" comic book crossover event in 1982, the editors realized they could not pull off a multiverse wipeout without knowing exactly what the company had already published. So they hired a researcher to go through its library and read every DC comic ever published, a job that took two years. That deep-dive slowed the project down, and the series’ schedule slipped partly because the research and planning were not ready until DC finally lined it up with the company’s 50th anniversary rollout.
