Rod Serling, the creator of "The Twilight Zone," pitched the show as straight entertainment because earlier projects got slammed by censorship when they tried to touch hot social and political topics. He basically sold it as harmless TV to get it on the air. Then "The Twilight Zone" went right back to those same issues, just dressed up as science fiction and fantasy.
