In the 2005-2006 The Other comic book storyline, Peter Parker died after his brutal fight with Morlun, and then his body later appeared to have been reduced to an empty sack of skin. Under the Brooklyn Bridge, he spun a cocoon, underwent a spider-like rebirth, and emerged alive in a new, healed body. The story was so bizarre that fans often joked Spider-Man had “given birth to himself." Marvel used the storyline to reset his body, restore old injuries, and push Peter further into the stranger mythic side of his powers.
