When Stan Lee first pitched Spider-Man, his publisher rejected the idea and called it the worst one he had ever heard, arguing that readers hated spiders, teenagers could only be sidekicks, and superheroes could not have personal problems. Instead of dropping the character, Lee moved ahead anyway and had Spider-Man appear in the final issue of the canceled series Amazing Fantasy. That issue sold so well that the same publisher quickly reversed course and wanted a full Spider-Man series.
