Tobey Maguire Nearly Lost Spider-Man

Before Spider-Man 2 went into production, Tobey Maguire raised concerns that his back problems could keep him from returning as Peter Parker. As the situation worsened, Sony moved far enough toward a replacement that Jake Gyllenhaal was lined up to take over the role. Maguire recovered, stayed with the sequel, and the film ultimately moved forward without Gyllenhaal in the suit. Years later, the two actors appeared together in Brothers in 2009.
