Self-taught naturalist Ray Stanford stunned paleontologists by finding dinosaur tracks in the Washington, D.C. and Maryland suburbs, an area where only a small number had been recognized before he started searching seriously. Over the years, he built a reputation for spotting tiny patterns and odd shapes in exposed rock that other people walked past, and that skill helped him uncover hundreds of prints and several major sites. His finds eventually included important track slabs at places like NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, where later study revealed a remarkable collection of ancient footprints. Stanford also spent much of his life pursuing UFOs.
