A lot of prehistoric ocean animals get called dinosaurs, but the big ones that ruled ancient seas were actually different kinds of reptiles. Creatures like ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and mosasaurs lived in the water while dinosaurs dominated the land, which is why museums separate marine reptiles from dinosaurs. That means the classic “ocean dinosaurs” never really existed in the way people imagine them.
