In the 19th century, North America battled the Rocky Mountain locust, a species that could gather in staggering numbers and devastate entire regions. In 1875, one swarm became so enormous that it set the record for the largest animal concentration ever recorded. Then the species disappeared with startling speed, as by 1904, people stopped seeing the Rocky Mountain locust altogether.
