Ed Sullivan Defied Ford Over Black Acts

On The Ed Sullivan Show, American TV host Ed Sullivan drew backlash from Ford Lincoln dealers who sponsored the program after he kissed American singer Pearl Bailey on the cheek and shook American singer Nat King Cole’s hand on-air. He escalated the fight when a Ford executive complained that Sullivan booked too many Black acts, and Sullivan had the executive thrown out of the theater.
