Gregg shorthand is a handwriting system designed to be written faster than normal longhand or typing. Developed by American educator John Robert Gregg in 1888, the system uses simple curves and strokes to represent sounds rather than letters. Shorthand writers skilled in it can record speech extremely quickly, and some masters have reached speeds of around 280 words per minute.
