Industrialist Andrew Carnegie spent $56.2 million to build 2,509 libraries across the world. These buildings became known as Carnegie Libraries, and towns had to commit to maintaining them and funding their operation before they could receive his money. Today, about 900 Carnegie Libraries are still operating in the United States.
