During World War II, Allied naval officers in the Pacific began competing over a photo of actress Esther Williams. Ships that obtained the photograph would display it in their officers’ mess, and rival crews often stole or seized it during friendly raids or shore visits. The informal tradition continued for decades until it finally ended in 2013 after actress Esther Williams died.
