Happy Feet Penguin Swam 2000 Miles

In 2011, an emperor penguin later nicknamed Happy Feet arrived on a beach in New Zealand after swimming about 2,000 miles from Antarctica. He became only the second emperor penguin ever recorded in New Zealand, the first having appeared in 1967. While on the beach, Happy Feet began eating sand, likely mistaking it for snow. Veterinarians later removed about 4.4 pounds of sand from his stomach before releasing him back into the Southern Ocean.
