Before 1993, women were rarely included in clinical medical trials in the United States, which meant many treatments were tested mostly on men. That left major gaps in medical knowledge about how diseases, drugs, and symptoms affect women. Even after policy changes pushed for better inclusion, women have still remained substantially underrepresented in clinical trials for many leading diseases.
