Lafayette Became General at Nineteen

During the American Revolutionary War, Marquis de Lafayette traveled from France to support the American cause in 1777 when he was just 19 years old. Despite his youth and limited military experience, the Continental Congress appointed him a major general in the Continental Army. In France, Lafayette had never held a rank higher than captain, and even that position he had received as a ceremonial wedding gift.
