A California serial killer known as the “Tipster Killer” repeatedly contacted a crime-tip hotline after committing murders in the San Francisco Bay Area during the early 1980s. After each killing, he anonymously called authorities and provided directions to the victims’ bodies so he could qualify for the cash rewards offered for useful tips. The man behind the scheme was Robert Maury, who used the hotline to profit from crimes he had just committed. Investigators eventually connected Maury to the murders. Police arrested Maury in 1987, and he was later convicted of multiple murders and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
