In May 1991, a 14-year-old boy named Konerak Sinthasomphone escaped from the Milwaukee, Wisconsin apartment of Jeffrey Dahmer after being drugged and assaulted. Bystanders found the boy wandering the street naked, bleeding, and disoriented, and they called police for help. Officers John Balcerzak and Joseph Gabrish responded to the scene, where Dahmer claimed the boy was his adult lover and that they had simply argued. Despite warnings from concerned witnesses, the officers accepted Dahmer’s explanation and returned the teenager to the apartment. Once inside, Dahmer murdered Sinthasomphone shortly afterward.
