In 1966, while serving another sentence in Terminal Island Prison in California, Charles Manson made an unusual request to prison authorities. After spending roughly half of his 32 years behind bars, Manson told officials that prison had become his home and asked to remain incarcerated. Authorities rejected the request and released him as scheduled. Once free, Manson drifted through California’s counterculture communities and began attracting devoted followers. Within a few years, the serial killer had formed the Manson Family, the cult responsible for the notorious 1969 murders that shocked the United States.
