In 1977, serial killer Ted Bundy appeared in court in Aspen, Colorado, while representing himself during proceedings related to the murder of Caryn Campbell. Because he was acting as his own attorney, the judge allowed him to move around the courtroom without handcuffs or leg shackles. During a recess at the Pitkin County Courthouse, Bundy took advantage of the lack of restraints. He suddenly ran toward a window and jumped from the second story of the building. The escape sparked a massive manhunt, though authorities eventually captured Bundy several days later.
