Detroit’s 66-Year Population Slide Reverses

In 1957, Detroit stood as America’s fifth-largest city with 1.85 million residents, but it then endured 66 straight years of population loss, dropping to about 630,000 residents by 2022 and becoming the only U.S. city ever to fall back below 1 million after once surpassing it. In 2023, new U.S. Census Bureau estimates showed Detroit gaining 1,852 residents between July 1, 2022, and July 1, 2023, bringing its population to 633,366 and marking its first population increase since 1957.
