Normally, because the growth of the brain occurs in a predictable fashion, there is one primary hair whorl over the vertex of the head. As the brain expands in a regular pattern before birth, it shapes the overlying scalp so the hair spirals around that single, central point. When hair whorls are multiple or appear in unusual locations, that pattern suggests brain growth did not follow its usual course.
