Scientists studying Chernobyl’s Elephant’s Foot, a dense mass of corium and other materials beneath Reactor 4, found it too hard and radioactive to sample with normal drills. To collect material, they used an AK-47 loaded with armor-piercing rounds and shot at the surface to chip off fragments.
