AOL Dial-Up Runs Up Fortune

In 2015, 83-year-old Ron Dorff opened his AT&T landline bill in California and saw a charge of $8,596.57, followed by a second bill for $15,687.64. A technician eventually discovered that his modem had been dialing a long-distance number over and over to connect to AOL dial-up service. After Dorff contacted the Los Angeles Times about the problem, AT&T agreed to waive the charges.
