Ghost B-52 Circles Vermont Sky

In 1960, a B-52 on a night training mission out of Westover Air Force Base flew near the Canadian border when it slowly banked left and began descending toward Vermont. Thinking the aircraft was breaking up, the navigator ejected without orders, and the pilot heard the violent ejection and assumed the plane was coming apart. He ordered the rest of the crew to bail out, and eight men escaped, although one crew member later died from the attempt. The now crewless bomber kept flying in large spirals for about 50 miles before finally crashing in an open field near Vermont.
