In June 1997, thousands of mourners gathered in Honolulu to say goodbye to Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwoʻole after his death at age 38. Officials laid his body in state in the capitol building, an honor rarely given to a private citizen. About 10,000 people attended his funeral and paid their respects. Later, his family scattered his ashes into the Pacific Ocean, closing a farewell that drew crowds from across Hawaii.
