In 1999, a dying man who needed a pancreas transplant saw his insurance deny coverage for the operation. Michael Moore’s satirical TV show The Awful Truth took up his case and staged a mock funeral for him outside Humana’s corporate headquarters, complete with a coffin and public spectacle. The stunt put intense pressure on the company. Within about a week, Humana agreed to pay for the transplant, and the man received the life-saving surgery.
